The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
