Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
