The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
