British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
